KIND Snacks — a prominent manufacturer of nut-based snack bars and a subsidiary of Mars, Incorporated — has announced a significant achievement in its sustainability efforts, as the brand reports that it now sources approximately half of its almond volume from farms employing regenerative agriculture practices on a mass-balance basis. This milestone was reached thanks to the KIND Almond Acres Initiative, a three-year pilot program conducted in partnership with ingredient supplier ofi across California's Central Valley.

The KIND Almond Acres Initiative functioned as a large-scale living laboratory to test and measure the effectiveness of various farming techniques. The researchers observed cover cropping, compost application, subsurface irrigation, and reduced tillage. The goal was to determine whether such methods could deliver tangible environmental benefits while remaining economically viable for commercial almond production.

The data collected from the pilot plots demonstrated measurable improvements across several key metrics, including a nearly 20% increase in water use efficiency, a 33% reduction in synthetic nitrogen fertilizer application, a 28% decrease in overall carbon intensity, and notable enhancements in soil organic carbon levels and reduced soil compaction.
