Amsterdam's Artis Zoo is Recognized as an Urban Night Sky Place

Amsterdam's Artis Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in the world, is now the first in the world to receive the Urban Night Sky Place certificate for its light reduction efforts.
Artis conducted a thorough inventory of the lighting it used outdoors, removed or modified unnecessary fixtures and minimized energy consumption. Officially recognized as an Urban Night Sky Place by DarkSky International, the Artis Zoo recognizes not only the importance of proper rest and its role in supporting the natural biological cycles of animals in its care, but also how darkness impacts urban wildlife and people in the surrounding areas.
As an Urban Night Sky Place, Artis will continue to raise awareness about the effects of light pollution.
