Bird-Friendly Environment Initiatives

Michigan Audubon Launched its 'Bird City Michigan' Program

Michigan Audubon has launched 'Bird City Michigan,' a statewide program that recognizes communities demonstrating a clear commitment to creating bird-friendly environments. As part of the American Bird Conservancy’s national 'Bird City Network,' the initiative connects local conservation practices with broader environmental goals. The first communities to receive the designation include Ann Arbor, Big Rapids, Iosco County, the Village of Roscommon, and Sterling Heights.

To earn recognition, communities must implement initiatives such as planting native species, managing green spaces, reducing hazards for birds, and educating residents about wildlife stewardship. By encouraging these evidence-based practices, the program helps strengthen biodiversity and ecological resilience across the state.

Moreover, Bird City Michigan provides communities with an opportunity to attract nature-based tourism, a growing economic sector. As a result, the initiative supports both environmental conservation and local economic development in a mutually reinforcing way.
