Compressed Natural Gas-Powered Trucks

Iveco x Astra Launch a High-Performance Truck
Georgia Wray Norsten — June 28, 2025Truck manufacturer Iveco, in collaboration with engineering firm Astra Vehicle Technologies, has launched the 'S-Way 500 CNG 6×2' -- a heavy-duty truck powered by compressed natural gas with dramatically lower emissions. Revealed at the Road Transport Expo, this one-off model boasts a 500-horsepower xCursor 13 CNG engine, currently the most powerful natural gas engine in the market. When fueled with biomethane (renewable natural gas), the S-Way 500 can cut CO2 emissions by up to 95% compared to a similar diesel truck. Built on a 44-tonne 6×2 chassis, the vehicle is equipped with eight CNG tanks integrated into the frame, giving it a range of over 500 km while preserving cargo capacity.
Iveco also integrated advanced tech like MirrorCam digital mirrors (reducing aerodynamic drag) and predictive cruise control that optimizes fuel usage based on terrain. The launch unit features custom green-and-black livery and was presented as a 'statement truck' to showcase that long-haul freight can be moved efficiently with far fewer emissions. Iveco emphasized that this model reflects core technology available in its production lineup, and underscores the company’s strategy to offer alternatives (electric, CNG, etc.) for various transport needs.
