Conestoga Energy Advances Carbon Capture with a New CO₂ Well

Ethanol producer Conestoga Energy announced the completion of drilling for its first Class VI carbon capture and storage (CCS) well. The well, located in Kansas, is designed to permanently store carbon dioxide from Conestoga’s biofuel plants deep underground, preventing these emissions from entering the atmosphere. This drilling milestone is a key step as Conestoga prepares to apply for an EPA permit to operate the sequestration site.
Once the Class VI well is fully permitted and operational, Conestoga will be able to inject captured CO₂, thereby reducing the carbon intensity of its ethanol production. The company noted this achievement moves it closer to a vertically integrated carbon management strategy -- from capturing CO₂ during fermentation to securely storing it -- thereby aligning with federal 45Q tax credit incentives and low-carbon fuel market opportunities.
