Duke Energy Florida Develops a Next-Gen System for Hydrogen

Duke Energy Florida has developed a next-generation green hydrogen system with the launch of the 'DeBary Hydrogen Production Storage System' in Volusia County, Florida. The demonstration project is the first in the United States to operate an integrated, end-to-end system capable of producing, storing, and combusting up to 100 percent green hydrogen, highlighting hydrogen’s potential role in reducing carbon emissions from power generation.
The system is powered by Duke Energy Florida’s existing DeBary solar facility, which "supplies renewable electricity to electrolyzers that split water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis; the process produces no direct emissions, with oxygen released safely and hydrogen stored for later use." During periods of high demand, the stored green hydrogen fuels an upgraded combustion turbine capable of operating without fossil fuels.
By enabling on-demand, zero-carbon energy, the system supports greater integration of renewable resources, reduces reliance on natural gas, and enhances grid flexibility. This approach contributes to lower emissions, improved sustainability, and long-term decarbonization of the energy mix.
