Utility Global — " a U.S.-based leader in clean hydrogen technology" — and major steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal have joined forces to assess the feasibility of an innovative hydrogen production system at a Brazilian steel facility.
The clean hydrogen-focused project has entered a detailed engineering design phase that will help evaluate the technical and economic viability of deploying a proprietary technology to generate hydrogen from water through an electrochemical process. Eliminating the need for external electricity, this method utilizes waste gas from blast furnaces as an energy source. A key feature of this system is its ability to simultaneously produce a concentrated stream of carbon dioxide that is suitable for capture, thereby addressing two decarbonization challenges within the steel production process. The hydrogen output is intended for reuse within the plant to displace natural gas, while the purified CO₂ stream is designed to simplify subsequent sequestration efforts.
