Green Hydrogen Pilot Plants
Lummus Technology and Advanced Ionics Embark on Construction
Kalin Ned — January 5, 2026Two industrial firms — Lummus Technology and Advanced Ionics — have commenced the construction phase for a new green hydrogen pilot plant.
The facility, situated at Lummus's research and development complex in Texas, is designed to evaluate and refine Advanced Ionics' proprietary electrolyzer system under operational conditions. This electrolyzer represents a significant product innovation, as it is engineered to function with lower electrical input than conventional models by utilizing existing industrial heat. This, in turn, could substantially decrease the expense associated with generating hydrogen from renewable energy sources.
The construction of the green hydrogen pilot plant constitutes a pivotal phase in the pre-existing alliance between Lummus Technology and Advanced Ionics. While the announcement expresses optimistic projections regarding economic viability and commercial scalability, the ultimate success of the technology will depend on the empirical results obtained from this pilot-scale operation and its subsequent ability to attract commercial adoption.
