Upcycled Carbon Dioxide Feedstock
The European VIVALDI Project Transforms Carbon Dioxide into Feed
Kalin Ned — November 13, 2025The European VIVALDI project is a multi-institutional research initiative that has formulated an integrated process for converting carbon dioxide emissions from bio-industrial operations into commercially useful organic acids.
This methodology employs a sequence of technologies, beginning with the capture and purification of CO₂ from sectors such as pulp and paper manufacturing and food processing. The subsequent steps involve an electrochemical conversion of the gas into simpler compounds like formic acid and methanol, which then serve as feedstocks for genetically modified microorganisms to synthesize more complex acids — like lactic and succinic acid — which are foundational for products like bioplastics and animal feed additives.
The European VIVALDI project has validated this chain in a laboratory setting and aims to advance it to a larger pilot scale.
