Fumba Town, launched in 2015 by CPS Africa, marks its tenth year as a prominent example of environmentally conscious urban development in East Africa. The project was established to demonstrate that sustainability and modern urban living can coexist, and it has since evolved into a model for resource-efficient, climate-aware community planning.

Central to its environmental impact is the use of engineered timber construction, which significantly reduces embodied carbon, minimizes reliance on rapidly depleting coastal building sand, and enables faster, lower-waste construction processes. Fumba Town also prioritizes renewable energy and independent water systems, incorporating solar rooftops, rainwater harvesting, and decentralized wastewater treatment to reduce strain on regional utilities and lower overall environmental footprints.

These integrated strategies highlight how thoughtful material selection, circular water management, and clean energy adoption can support resilient, low-impact growth, positioning Fumba Town as a benchmark for sustainable urban development in Zanzibar and the broader region.
