Sustainable Island Ferry Efforts

Greece Invests in Sustainable Tourism for Ferry Rides

Greece is stepping up its efforts to make island travel more sustainable for both locals and tourists. With many visitors hopping between islands by ferry, the country is investing in greener technologies to reduce the environmental impact of sea travel.

Greek ferry companies are introducing hybrid and LNG-powered vessels, which cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel efficiency. Shorter routes are seeing the rollout of electric ferries, moving closer to fully zero-emission travel in the near future. Most larger ferries are already equipped with scrubbers to reduce sulfur oxide and particulate emissions, meeting strict IMO 2020 standards.

Onboard, energy-saving measures such as LED lighting, intelligent power management systems, and advanced waste-reduction practices further help reduce environmental impact.
