The Reconstructing Value Turns Banknotes into Benches

The Reconstructing Value project turns banknotes into benches as a creative statement using withdrawn British currency. Designers collected £2.5 million in out-of-circulation notes, shredded them, then reformed the fibers with a polymer binder to retain texture and subtle security graphics. The benches echo the pound symbol (£) when viewed from above, creating functional seating that also serves as a conceptual sculpture.

Each bench is paired with materials like Roman mosaic tile, Portland stone, and aged brass to reflect heritage surfaces and historic décor. Set in a former stock room once used for vaults and ledgers, the installation shifts a space of storage into one of public gathering. By reusing discarded money, the project not only explores value and purpose but models a circular approach to waste. The work questions how worth is assigned, and whether something discarded might still carry meaning.
