Natural Attraction Regulations
New Zealand will Introduce Entry Fees for Scenic Natural Areas
Debra John — August 8, 2025In 2027, New Zealand will introduce entry fees for its most visited scenic natural areas, including Cathedral Cove, Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Milford Track, and Aoraki Mount Cook. This initiative aims to address the ecological strain caused by rising tourism while safeguarding the integrity of these treasured landscapes.
Fees ranging from NZD $11.62 to $23.23 will be applied to international visitors, with proceeds allocated to ecological restoration, trail maintenance, and infrastructure improvements. These funds will help mitigate environmental wear and support biodiversity conservation efforts.
Rather than restricting access, the regulation reflects a growing global shift toward responsible tourism, encouraging visitors to participate in the preservation of the very places they come to admire. By reinforcing sustainability at the core of its tourism strategy, New Zealand is ensuring its natural heritage endures for generations to come.
