Local Recycling Initiatives

Shetland Accepts New Plastics Under its Expanded Recycling Program

In response to evolving consumer demands, Shetland will now accept yoghurt pots, butter tubs, and plastic trays as a part of its plastic recycling initiative. The Shetland Islands Council says the expansion will boost local recycling rates and help meet national targets, with no changes to collection schedules. The service currently accepts plastic bottles, drink cartons, and metal tins, which are placed by consumers into grey wheelie bins for proper and timely disposal.

Plans are also underway to add more glass and battery recycling points across the isles. This includes replacing current “bee hive” glass bins with larger wheelie bins in more locations, and expanding battery drop-off points in local shops to ensure safe collection and storage.
