Subsea desalination systems developed by Flocean and WaterConnect are designed to improve water security in the Maldives through lower-energy offshore infrastructure. The project will place desalination equipment underwater, using natural ocean pressure to reduce energy consumption by approximately 40% compared to conventional systems. The approach also minimizes land usage and reduces the environmental impact associated with brine discharge, making it particularly suitable for densely populated island regions such as Malé and Hulhumalé.
The partnership highlights how climate-resilient water infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for coastal and water-stressed regions facing population growth and rising sea levels. Lower-energy desalination systems could help utilities reduce operating costs while improving long-term water reliability for households and businesses.
