Hydrogen-Powered Switching Locomotives
Sierra Northern Railway is Aiming to Lower Its Emissions
Kalin Ned — September 26, 2025Sierra Northern Railway has conducted a successful operational trial of a hydrogen-powered switching locomotive, a unit designed for organizing rail cars within freight yards. This four-axle vehicle utilizes a hydrogen fuel cell to generate electricity and produces only water vapor as a direct emission.
Sierra Northern Railway's trial of the innovative hydrogen-powered switching locomotive was financially supported by a public grant from the California Energy Commission, with collaboration from several technical and energy sector partners. The railway positions this achievement as a critical step toward making zero-emission switching technology a commercially viable option for the short-line railroad industry.
The replacement of older, high-polluting diesel switchers — which consume significant amounts of fuel annually — with such technology could lead to substantial reductions in diesel usage and associated emissions across the state.
