The industrial manufacturer SKF has established a digital platform, named The Patent Bay. This initiative is designed to facilitate the sharing of patented technologies that have potential sustainability benefits.

The Patent Bay will allow both SKF and other participating entities to list specific patents that others can then use without incurring licensing costs. The objective is to accelerate the development and implementation of environmentally beneficial innovations by removing intellectual property barriers.

SFK contextualizes the launch of The Patent Bay platform within a broader narrative of historical technological advancements that were propelled by open sharing. The first technology made available through this service is a specialized bearing alloy developed for the aviation sector, which is claimed to contribute to a significant reduction in engine emissions by enabling more efficient engine designs.
