The University of New Mexico Launched a Bike Valet Service
Colin Smith — December 4, 2025The University of New Mexico has launched a student‑funded Bike Valet pilot providing free, staffed parking for bicycles, e‑bikes, scooters, and other micromobility devices at central campus locations adjacent to Popejoy Hall and the Student Union Building. Operated by Parking and Transportation Services with funding from the Student Fee Review Board, the service is available to students, staff, and faculty and is intended to increase convenience, reduce theft risk, and support sustainable commuting choices. The valet opened at the start of the fall 2025 semester and is presented as a complement to existing bike racks, shuttle services, and campus bike infrastructure.
The initiative is structured as a one‑year pilot for academic year 2025–26 designed to collect usage data and assess operational requirements for potential expansion. University planners will monitor utilization rates, theft deterrence outcomes, and integration with campus wayfinding and safety protocols to inform future design and funding decisions. The pilot includes staff oversight and training elements to support reliable operation, and administrators intend to use the evaluation to determine whether to scale the service or adopt a permanent model aligned with campus sustainability and modal shift objectives.
