Water-Efficient Data Centers
Vertiv Recycles Commissioning Water to Reduce Resource Consumption
mursal rahman — June 4, 2026Water-efficient data centers are becoming increasingly important as AI workloads and high-density computing environments place greater demands on cooling infrastructure. Vertiv's PurgeRite NearZero service addresses this challenge by recycling water used during the commissioning of closed-loop hydronic cooling systems. The process combines engineered flushing, filtration, water treatment, reverse osmosis and continuous monitoring to reduce the amount of fresh water required while minimizing wastewater generation.
By keeping water in a closed-loop cycle throughout the commissioning process, the service helps data center operators lower resource consumption, reduce hauling requirements and limit disposal costs. In selected deployments, the approach has significantly reduced water usage, wastewater volumes and transportation needs associated with conventional commissioning methods. Fewer tanker deliveries and removals can also help decrease fuel consumption and related emissions.
As digital infrastructure continues expanding, resource-efficient commissioning practices may become increasingly valuable for organizations seeking to balance operational reliability, sustainability objectives and infrastructure growth.
