Advanced Modular Reactors
FANCO and AtkinsRéalis Accelerate Fast-Spectrum Nuclear Deployment
mursal rahman — May 13, 2026Advanced modular reactors are gaining momentum as energy companies seek scalable low-carbon alternatives capable of delivering stable baseload electricity. First American Nuclear (FANCO) partnered with AtkinsRéalis to accelerate deployment of the EAGL-1 fast-spectrum small modular reactor system and associated fuel recycling infrastructure in the United States. The reactor design uses lead-bismuth cooling technology, enabling simpler safety systems, factory-based manufacturing, and lower deployment costs compared to traditional nuclear facilities. FANCO also plans to develop a closed-fuel-cycle system capable of reprocessing and reusing spent nuclear fuel, significantly reducing long-term nuclear waste while improving fuel flexibility.
The partnership highlights growing industry interest in advanced nuclear systems as governments and utilities pursue energy security and decarbonization goals simultaneously. Factory-fabricated SMRs could shorten construction timelines, reduce infrastructure costs, and expand access to utility-scale clean power for industrial facilities and regional grids. The project may also strengthen domestic nuclear supply chains, engineering capabilities, and long-term investment in advanced energy infrastructure.
