Rolls-Royce SMR Won a Contract to Build Three Modular Reactors

Rolls-Royce SMR signed a contract with Great British Energy, a UK government-backed company, to deliver the country's first three small modular reactors at Wylfa in North Wales. The small modular reactor UK program is backed by £2.5 billion in government funding, with an additional £599 million committed by the National Wealth Fund to support the technology's development.

The small modular reactors are compact nuclear plants that can be built faster and deployed closer to the grid than traditional facilities, producing carbon-free electricity at a high rate. Each Rolls-Royce unit generates 1,358 MW of heat using a pressurized water system that drives steam turbines connected to the national grid.

The Rolls-Royce SMR contract shows how smaller, faster-to-build nuclear technology is becoming a practical part of the conversation around reliable, low-carbon power generation.
