Cetnrica Announced 40MW Battery Storage Project in Sweden
Colin Smith — April 16, 2026Centrica has activated two battery energy storage systems in Borlänge, Sweden, with a combined capacity of 40MW. The installations were developed in partnership with Omexom and are expected to provide around 21,900MWh of annual output. Their primary function is to support grid flexibility by balancing fluctuations in electricity supply and demand within Sweden’s renewable‑heavy power system. The assets represent Centrica’s entry into the Swedish battery storage market and form part of the company’s broader multibillion‑pound investment strategy focused on low carbon flexibility.
Centrica Energy, the company’s route‑to‑market subsidiary, will optimise the operation of both systems. This includes real‑time adjustment of battery output to maximise the use of renewable electricity and ensure stable returns on investment. The addition of these assets expands Centrica’s European optimisation portfolio to more than 770MW of contracted battery storage capacity. The project also aligns with Centrica’s wider investments in technologies such as nuclear, hydrogen, solar power and additional storage solutions aimed at supporting long‑term energy system resilience.
