ABP Southampton and BW ESS have entered a partnership to deploy advanced energy storage systems at the Port of Southampton aimed at improving local energy resilience and supporting operational continuity. The agreement centres on installing battery energy storage technology that can provide peak‑shaving, demand‑response, and backup power capabilities for port infrastructure and tenant operations. Project objectives include reducing exposure to grid outages, smoothing intra‑day load variability driven by cargo handling and terminal operations, and creating faster response capacity to support critical port services.

The partnership also frames energy storage as an enabler of decarbonisation and efficiency improvements by facilitating greater integration of low‑carbon generation and optimising on‑site energy use. Operational elements of the deal cover system design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance arrangements, alongside monitoring and control systems to coordinate storage dispatch with port loads and grid signals. The initiative is presented as part of ABP Southampton’s broader strategy to strengthen infrastructure resilience and support sustainable, reliable energy services for growing maritime and logistics activity.
