Energy Company Storage Expansions
NextStar Energy is Expanding into Energy Storage Solutions
Colin Smith — November 4, 2025NextStar Energy has expanded its manufacturing scope to include energy storage system (ESS) batteries at its Windsor, Ontario facility, positioning the plant as Canada’s first large-scale lithium-ion battery manufacturer and aligning production capabilities with evolving grid and commercial storage needs. The company describes its operations as engineering advanced lithium‑ion cells and module systems intended to support next‑generation mobility and stationary storage applications, and it frames the expansion as part of a broader strategy to accelerate electrification and cleaner energy deployment in North America.
To support ESS production, NextStar has introduced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry alongside existing Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) capabilities and is conducting material testing and equipment calibration ahead of mass production, which the company reports will begin imminently from the Windsor plant. The expansion is accompanied by workforce growth and training initiatives—NextStar reports hiring more than 1,000 employees and participating in skills programs such as Battery Boost—to scale manufacturing readiness and support joint‑venture partners and market commitments across EV and stationary storage segments.
