Greenfield Battery Storage Projects

The EBRD Backed the IE-Energy Projekt in Croatia

The IE‑Energy Projekt is a Croatia‑based initiative to develop grid‑connected battery storage and a virtual power plant (VPP) platform aimed at increasing system flexibility and integrating renewable generation into the national grid. The project centres on deploying utility‑scale battery assets coupled with software for aggregating and dispatching distributed resources, enabling participation in ancillary services, peak shaving, and market‑based balancing mechanisms while supporting predictable power delivery for local customers.

Financial structuring for the project includes equity investment and developmental support intended to accelerate construction and commercial operation, with backers positioning the facility as a component of Croatia’s clean‑energy transition and capacity to meet short‑term balancing needs. Operational objectives emphasise interoperability with existing market operators and grid codes, predictable revenue stacking through energy and ancillary service markets, and the creation of local jobs and supply‑chain activity during deployment and early operations.
