Battery Energy Storage Expansions
Energy Vault Acquired a Battery Energy Storage Portfolio
Adam Harrie — April 15, 2026Energy Vault has entered the Japanese energy storage market by acquiring an 850 MW battery energy storage portfolio, including 350 MW of advanced-stage energy projects targeting commercial operation by mid-2028. The deal pushed the company's total ownership of global battery energy storage past 1 GW and is expected to generate more than $180 million in annual revenue once it is fully operational.
Japan's national grid has undergone a structural shift in recent years toward "revenue stacking," in which battery storage assets generate returns across wholesale energy markets, capacity markets and grid-balancing services.
As the renewable energy storage market accelerates across Japan and grid flexibility becomes critical infrastructure, Energy Vault signals that global storage operations are securing early market positions in developed economies.
