esVolta Transfers ITS from Its Black Walnut Project to Computacenter
Kalin Ned — January 5, 2026esVolta, a developer and operator of large-scale energy storage systems, has finalized a novel financial transaction related to its recently activated Black Walnut battery facility in California. This arrangement involves the transfer of the Investment Tax Credit — or ITC, for short — from esVolta to the technology infrastructure firm Computacenter. This deal represents the inaugural use of this particular credit transfer mechanism by esVolta, which is owned by the sustainable infrastructure investment entity Generate Capital.
The Black Walnut energy storage project, which became operational in October 2025, contributes a capacity of fifteen megawatts for up to four hours of discharge to the state's primary electricity grid operator. The expansion of battery storage capacity, as exemplified by the Black Walnut project, directly supports the integration of variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind by storing excess generation for use during periods of high demand or low renewable output. This enhances grid reliability and resilience.
