Microsoft Partnered with Powertrust to Deploy 270Mw Farm
Colin Smith — November 26, 2025Microsoft and Powertrust structured the agreement to accelerate construction of a 270 MW portfolio of distributed solar projects over a four‑year period, targeting underserved regions in Mexico and Brazil and prioritising community impact and local job creation. The arrangement specifies that Microsoft will purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated by the projects, providing a revenue stream to underpin project financing and to support Powertrust’s aggregation model for small‑scale renewable assets. The partnership is presented as part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to expand low‑carbon energy procurement in emerging markets while enabling distributed generation that can serve local demand and reduce reliance on fossil‑fuel generation.
Operationally, Powertrust will aggregate and finance distributed solar developments, while Microsoft’s REC purchases are intended to improve project bankability and attract additional investment. The initiative emphasizes community engagement, partnerships with local NGOs, and inclusive development practices to ensure social and economic benefits in host communities, including job creation and energy access improvements. The partners also highlight the use of distributed Renewable Energy Certificates (D‑RECs) and verification mechanisms to provide transparent impact reporting for corporate buyers. The collaboration is positioned as a model for scaling distributed renewables in Latin America by combining corporate procurement commitments with an aggregator‑financier approach to project development.
