GEN-I Signed with SUNOTEC on Battery Energy Storage Plan
Colin Smith — November 18, 2025GEN-I and SUNOTEC have entered a five-year partnership in which GEN-I will manage and optimize two large battery energy storage systems (BESS) that SUNOTEC is constructing in Bulgaria, with combined rated capacity of approximately 200 MW and storage capacities of 379 MWh (150 MW plant) and 126 MWh (50 MW plant); both facilities are expected to be fully operational by the end of March 2026. Under the agreement, GEN-I will act as exclusive asset optimizer and trading partner, providing real-time dispatch, algorithmic market optimization, and 24/7 operational support to enable participation in wholesale intraday and day-ahead markets as well as ancillary service mechanisms.
The collaboration is structured around a long-term revenue-sharing model intended to align the interests of SUNOTEC as asset owner and GEN-I as market operator, and to maximize market value while maintaining regulatory compliance and operational stability. The partnership combines SUNOTEC’s engineering and construction capabilities with GEN-I’s energy trading and optimization expertise, and is presented as a lifecycle-oriented approach spanning development, construction, operational management, and market integration for BESS projects in the South East European region.
