SoftBank Launched a Battery Business for Its AI Infrastructure

SoftBank launched a Japan-based battery business aimed at performing gigawatt-hour-scale production by 2028. The company is developing zinc-halogen battery cells with COSMOS LAB. These cells run on pure water instead of a flammable organic electrolyte, removing the fire risk that has long been one of lithium-ion’s biggest liabilities. Manufacturing will take place at a new GX Factory built alongside SoftBank’s Osaka Sakai AI Data Center.

Energy storage systems come from a separate collaboration with DeltaX, layered with an AI-powered energy management system that SoftBank built using its own electricity demand forecasting work. The target is 100 billion JPY in annual domestic battery revenue by 2030.

SoftBank shows how building an in-house battery supply chain, rather than depending on external providers, can turn energy infrastructure into a competitive advantage.
