Rivian has partnered with Redwood Materials to deploy a battery energy storage system at its Illinois facility using second-life electric vehicle battery packs. The system integrates more than 100 retired battery units, delivering 10 MWh of dispatchable energy, reducing energy costs and supporting grid reliability during peak demand periods.

Rivian supplies the battery packs, and Redwood integrates them into its energy platform with proprietary management technology to enable on-site energy use. The system is designed to scale quickly and leverages existing battery assets to accelerate deployment compared to new infrastructure buildouts.

The project demonstrates how second-life EV batteries can be repurposed into stationary energy storage, extending their lifespan and offering flexible capacity to offset peak demand and reduce strain on industrial energy systems.
