Allianz Global Has Acquired a Stake in GESI to Scale Battery Storage
Adam Harrie — April 30, 2026German company Allianz Global Investors has acquired a 51% stake in Green Energy Storage Initiative, a German developer building large-scale battery storage systems at decommissioned power plant sites across Germany. The German battery storage portfolio covers three projects with a combined grid connection capacity of nearly 2.6 GW, placing the company among the largest battery storage developments in the country, with commissioning targeted for 2029.
The projects are located in key transmission areas, allowing them to reuse existing electrical grid infrastructure rather than build new connections. GESI also has an additional project pipeline beyond the three active developments.
Allianz has shown how investing institutional capital can help develop grid-flexibility infrastructure that makes large-scale clean energy integration reliable.
