TotalEnergies approved the $1.2 billion Mirny project in Kazakhstan, featuring a 1 GW wind farm combined with a 600 MWh battery storage system, making it the country's first grid-scale battery installation. The Kazakhstan wind energy project is projected to generate 100 TWh of clean electricity over 25 years, enough to serve about one million people under a long-term government power purchase agreement.

Approximately 75% of the investment is provided by external lending, comprising the EBRD, Proparco, Société Générale and China Construction Bank. Meanwhile, TotalEnergies holds a 60% stake, partnering with Samruk Energy and KazMunayGas.

As Central Asian nations work to reduce fossil fuel dependence, TotalEnergies shows how pairing large-scale wind generation with grid-scale battery storage can provide a reliable, clean power source that energy grids need.
