A collaborative research initiative led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in partnership with major music industry entities like Coldplay, Warner Music Group (WMG), Live Nation, and Hope Solutions, has produced a pioneering carbon emissions calculation that quantifies the greenhouse gas output attributable to live music events across the United States and the United Kingdom for one year.

The study examined data from tens of thousands of performances and identified the primary sources of emissions across the entire event lifecycle — from audience transportation and freight logistics to on-site concessions and energy use. The annual carbon emissions calculation has positioned the live music sector as a modest but culturally significant contributor to overall national emissions, suggesting that strategic interventions within its operations could influence broader environmental behaviors and set impactful precedents.
