Sustainable Large-Scale Festivals

Outside Festival reported that it had successfully reduced the environmental impact of its large-scale event, even as participant numbers increased substantially. In order to achieve this, the organizers implemented a multi-faceted strategy targeting key areas of waste and emissions.

Outside Festival's eco-conscious approach included a successful refillable cup program that drastically cut down on single-use plastic bottles, the deployment of large battery systems to minimize generator use, and initiatives that encouraged alternative transportation, resulting in nearly a third of attendees utilizing low-emission or zero-emission travel methods. These concerted efforts yielded a measurable outcome — a threefold reduction in the event's overall carbon emissions compared to the previous year and a waste diversion rate that surpassed the industry average.
