The State of Hawaii has announced the introduction of a Green Tax, set to take effect in 2026, as part of its broader efforts to promote environmental sustainability and responsible tourism. The initiative responds to the growing pressures that high visitor volumes place on Hawaii’s fragile ecosystems, including its land, marine environments, and natural resources, which have faced increasing strain from pollution and waste generation.

Introduced by Governor Josh Green, the policy will "add 0.75% to existing accommodation taxes, raising the overall rate from 10.25% to 11%." The levy will also extend to cruise ships docking in Hawaii, ensuring a consistent approach across major tourism sectors.

The Green Tax is projected to generate "approximately $100 million annually, with revenues dedicated to environmental restoration, hazard mitigation, infrastructure resilience, and sustainable tourism development." By directing funds toward these initiatives, Hawaii aims to balance economic growth with long-term ecological preservation, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable environmental management.
