J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Sustainability Index revealed a direct link between utility sustainability, customer satisfaction and clean energy commitment, with 82% of utilities scoring at or above average on the Sustainability Index also ranking highly in overall customer satisfaction. The study found that 64% of electric utility customers prioritize economic, health and energy security benefits over environmental concerns when evaluating support for clean energy.

Customer awareness of utility sustainability efforts continues to rise, with 30% of electric customers now aware that their utility has declared a greenhouse gas elimination goal, up from 22% in 2024. Utilities ranking highest on the Sustainability Index, including Con Edison, DTE Energy, Entergy Texas, Georgia Power and Seattle City Light, also lead in customer awareness of their decarbonization commitments.

J.D. Power shows how clearly communicating clean energy targets and supporting them with visible actions, including EV programs, can strengthen consumer trust and long-term satisfaction.
