ABB's range of specialized industrial equipment — from its electric motors and variable speed drives — is designed for use in steel manufacturing and to enable low carbon steel production, in particular. These products are engineered to integrate with modern production methods, such as electric arc furnaces and direct reduced iron processes, which are considered pathways to lower the carbon footprint of steel production.
The company positions this as crucial as iron and steel production are estimated to generate about five percent of the EU's CO₂ emissions and seven to nine percent globally. Additionally, around "20% of steel manufacturing costs are energy-related."
ABB emphasizes that its technology can help reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency within steel plants, thereby supporting the industry's broader objective of decreasing its greenhouse gas emissions and achieving greater rates of low carbon steel production.
