Low-Wind Turbine Blades
Skystream Energy is developing low-wind turbine blades designed to produce more electricity when wind conditions are weak or inconsistent. Unlike conventional designs that may struggle with limited airflow, the new blades combine a larger swept area with specially shaped airfoils, allowing turbines to capture more available wind energy while potentially operating more quietly.
The airfoils, which are curved surfaces that influence airflow, have undergone wind tunnel testing to improve performance across light, turbulent, and stronger winds. A prototype is currently being evaluated in Iowa, where researchers are gathering data to determine its effectiveness. The blades may also be suitable for upgrading existing Skystream installations.
For homeowners, farms, and commercial properties, improved energy capture could make smaller wind systems more practical in challenging locations. Retrofitting existing equipment could also create additional opportunities for turbine owners and service providers without requiring complete system replacements.
