Sustainable Port Operation Projects
The MAGPIE Project from the Port of Rotterdam is Innovative
Colin Smith — May 16, 2026The MAGPIE project, co funded by the European Union and coordinated by the Port of Rotterdam, has launched a public exhibition at Portlantis to showcase innovations aimed at advancing sustainable and efficient port operations. The exhibition highlights technologies under development across the consortium’s 45 partners, including an offshore charging system, a hybrid shunting locomotive and automated truck charging infrastructure. These solutions represent broader efforts to support cleaner fuels, low emission transport and improved digital logistics tools. According to project leaders, the initiative is designed to help ports navigate the energy transition while maintaining competitiveness and operational resilience.
The Portlantis exhibition serves as a key outreach component of MAGPIE’s dissemination strategy, offering an accessible venue for the public, students, policymakers and industry professionals to engage with emerging port technologies. By presenting physical prototypes, scale models and augmented reality demonstrations, the exhibition illustrates how pilot concepts are progressing toward real world application. The Port of Rotterdam positions the project as part of a wider transformation underway across the logistics sector, with the exhibition intended to raise awareness, strengthen collaboration among European ports and encourage further investment in climate neutral port infrastructure.
