In-Conduit Hydropower Projects

Rentricity Harnesses Municipal Water Infrastructure for Electricity

Rentricity — "a leading developer of in-conduit hydropower systems" — has launched an initiative to generate electricity from municipal water infrastructure. This venture is made possible through the brand's collaboration with St. Mary's Area Water Authority (SMAWA) in Pennsylvania.

This project involves installing specialized turbine equipment within an existing gravity-fed pipeline to capture energy from water flow under relatively low pressure. The system is designed to operate without affecting water quality or supply reliability. It works to convert otherwise dissipated hydraulic force into electrical power for on-site use or grid contribution.

By harnessing the municipal water infrastructure, Rentricity aims to help SMAWA improve operational efficiency and support regional environmental objectives. This venture also serves as a case study that will deliver a replicable model for other municipalities.
