Mycelium Bicycle Seats

The Myco Seat by Ludwig Eder Uses Nature to Reinforce Technology

Ludwig Eder has developed the Myco Seat, a compostable bicycle saddle that integrates mycelium growth with a CNC-shaped wooden structure. The design uses computational modeling to determine precise perforation patterns, enabling airflow and guiding the mycelium to grow evenly and reinforce the seat from within.

The biomaterial forms by binding agricultural waste such as sawdust, hemp residues, and straw, creating a natural composite that hardens once dried. The result is a lightweight, fully biodegradable structure that replaces conventional synthetic materials.

The concept is supported by a Grow It Yourself kit from Grown.bio, allowing users to cultivate the seat themselves. By combining a substrate mix with mycelium spores and molding it into shape, the material grows over several days before being dried into a durable final product—allowing various users to craft their own products that embrace circular, bio-based design.
