Niagara Falls State Park is home to the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center, a project designed by GWWO Architects that emphasizes sustainability through integrated, environmentally responsible design strategies. The building has received a 2025 American Architecture Honorable Mention from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, recognizing its approach to energy efficiency and site-sensitive construction.

Sustainability is embedded throughout the welcome center’s design. Bifacial photovoltaic solar panels installed on the roof generate renewable energy while referencing the park’s historic relationship to power generation. The building is fully electric and was constructed on a previously developed site, with most of its footprint aligned to the former structure to minimize environmental impact.

By embedding the building into the landscape and incorporating a vegetated roof, heating and cooling demands are reduced. Water-saving measures include low-flow fixtures, irrigation sourced from the Niagara River, and cisterns that capture rainwater. Additional features such as LED lighting, high-performance insulation, and energy-efficient glazing further support long-term environmental performance.
