Nuclear Plant License Extensions
Constellation Extended Its Nuclear License into 2049
Adam Harrie — June 27, 2026Constellation filed nuclear license extension applications with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to continue operating the Ginna Clean Energy Center and Nine Mile Point Unit 1 in upstate New York through 2049. The filings follow New York State's renewal of its Zero Emissions Credit program, which Constellation said provides the financial certainty needed to support continued investment in the facilities.
The renewed ZEC program is projected to deliver $50 billion in ratepayer savings by 2050, contribute $38 billion to New York's economy and support 14,000 local jobs over the coming decades. Constellation's four upstate nuclear units currently generate nearly half of the state's clean electricity, while the NRC will now review maintenance plans, equipment and safety systems as part of the license renewal process.
Constellation's filings show how long-term policy support is helping extend the role of existing nuclear power plants as a foundation of clean electricity systems through mid-century.
