Ameren Missouri received approval from the Missouri Public Service Commission to proceed with the construction of the Big Hollow Energy Center, a hybrid facility that combines an eight-hundred-megawatt simple-cycle natural gas plant with a four-hundred-megawatt lithium-ion battery storage system at a single site in Jefferson County. This project represents the first large-scale integration of natural gas generation and battery technology within the state. It is designed to operate independently while sharing existing energy infrastructure to reduce both construction timelines and overall costs.

The natural gas plant component is intended to provide rapid-response power during extreme weather conditions and periods of peak demand, while the battery installation offers instantaneous backup capable of supplying electricity to thousands of homes for several hours.

Ameren Missouri plans to have the facility operational by 2028.
