New York Launched Its 1GW Advanced Nuclear Energy for Upstate
Adam Harrie — June 3, 2026The New York Power Authority issued a Request for Qualifications for advanced nuclear energy developers seeking at least 1GW of new capacity in Upstate New York. The solicitation advances Governor Hochul's NextGen Nuclear New York program and her proposed 5GW Nuclear Reliability Backbone, which, when combined with existing facilities, would bring the state's total zero-emission nuclear capacity to 8.4GW.
A separate $40 million workforce initiative launched alongside the effort, funding nuclear training, paid internships and career pathways through technical schools, community colleges, unions and trade organizations. More than 30 companies responded to earlier market engagement activities, signaling strong developer interest ahead of formal procurement.
New York shows how states are increasingly positioning firm, zero-emission nuclear generation as a strategic asset for grid reliability and long-term energy security.
