Solar Power Agreements
Ontario Secured Its New Clean Energy Procurement for a Solar Project
Adam Harrie — May 11, 2026Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator formalized a clean energy procurement agreement with FirstLight for the 57.2 MW Fort Frances Solar Project, developed in partnership with Lac Des Mille Lacs First Nation. The contract was awarded through the province’s Long-Term 2 process, which selected 14 projects representing more than 1,300 MW of new renewable energy capacity for Ontario’s grid.
The solar project is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 8,000 homes annually. It also builds on FirstLight’s longstanding presence in the region through the 13.1 MW Fort Frances Generating Station, a hydroelectric facility on the Rainy River that has operated since 1909.
As Canadian provinces continue expanding renewable energy infrastructure, FirstLight shows how pairing legacy hydroelectric assets with new solar generation can support more reliable and lower-emission electricity systems at the regional scale.
