Advanced Nuclear Fleets
TerraPower Expanded Fleet-Scale Natrium Reactor Deployment
mursal rahman — May 20, 2026Advanced nuclear fleets being developed by TerraPower through partnerships with HD Hyundai and Hyundai Engineering & Construction are designed to accelerate deployment of Natrium reactors with integrated energy storage capabilities. The Natrium system combines a sodium-cooled fast reactor with molten salt-based energy storage that can increase output from 345 MW to 500 MW during periods of high electricity demand. The collaboration will support large-scale manufacturing, construction, and supply chain development for future reactor deployments while establishing serial production capabilities for critical reactor components.
The agreements highlight how advanced nuclear companies are increasingly building scalable industrial ecosystems rather than developing standalone reactors. Integrated nuclear energy storage systems may help utilities provide reliable low-carbon power while supporting grid flexibility as renewable energy adoption expands. As electricity demand rises from data centers, industrial electrification, and AI infrastructure, fleet-scale reactor deployment could become an increasingly important part of long-term clean-energy and grid modernization strategies.
