Nuclear Campus Investments
Canada Committed $2.2B to Modernize Its Chalk River Nuclear Labs
Adam Harrie — May 23, 2026The Government of Canada committed $2.2 billion to revitalize Chalk River Laboratories, the more than 70-year-old campus that anchors Canada’s nuclear science capacity. The investment in Canadian nuclear energy research funds the renewal of approximately 60 buildings, energy-efficient heating and cooling upgrades and the continued construction of the Advanced Nuclear Materials Research Center, a 12,700-square-meter facility with 23 laboratories and 12 shielded hot cells for examining SMRs and next-generation nuclear fuels.
The funding supports Canada’s forthcoming Nuclear Energy Strategy and positions the country across power generation, fuel development, reactor life extension and advanced reactor design, including SMRs and fusion.
Canada shows how sustained public investment in national research infrastructure can build the scientific foundation needed to develop and deploy the next generation of nuclear technologies.
