Onboard Waste Circularity
Princess Cruises Deploys Biodigesters for Food Waste Reduction
Mursal Rahman — June 20, 2026Onboard waste circularity is advancing sustainable operations in the cruise industry by enabling food waste to be processed directly where it is generated. Power Knot's deployment of 26 biodigesters aboard Princess Cruises' Star Princess uses natural aerobic digestion to break down organic waste into water, reducing reliance on conventional disposal methods and minimizing waste storage needs. Installed across galleys and waste-handling areas, the systems create a continuous treatment process that supports cleaner and more efficient ship operations.
This development highlights how cruise operators are embedding resource recovery into vessel design rather than treating waste management as a separate function. By lowering disposal costs, reducing environmental impact, and supporting compliance with maritime regulations, onboard biodigestion can improve both operational and sustainability performance. The approach also aligns with growing consumer and regulatory expectations for greener travel experiences. As the cruise sector seeks practical ways to reduce its environmental footprint, onboard waste circularity solutions may become a key differentiator for future vessel deployments and fleet modernization strategies.
